As Friedman (2000) says, protestors appeared to lack any coherent reportable ideology, agenda, or strategy. The backlash against globalization is widespread and involves many disparate groups: protectionist labor union members environmentalists and those opposed to sweatshops in Micronesia, genetically altered foods from Europe, or the killing of turtles by deep sea tuna fishermen from Japan and Taiwan. Violence erupted in Seattle at the World Trade Organization (WTO) summit in December 1999.
